Night Lenses

Ortho-K contact lenses are worn at night when sleeping and have the ability to provide clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K lenses are suited to people who are short-sighted (-4.50D or less).

Bespoke Fit. Can be easier for Children. No need for daytime lenses.

Night Lenses, also known as Ortho-K Lenses, are worn at night and taken out during the day. Giving you clear, perfect vision with no need for glasses or day time lenses.

The way our Night Lenses are designed, makes them a genuinely bespoke fit for each individual patient. This leads to higher initial fitting success.

Ortho-K contact lenses are worn at night when sleeping and have the ability to provide clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K lenses are suited to people who are short-sighted (-4.50D or less). The Ortho-K technology we use is only available from a handful of highly-skilled optometrists.

Night lenses have a number of lifestyle benefits, over soft lenses, including being easier to handle for kids. Ortho-K lenses in childhood can also be used to control the amount of short sightedness your child develops, and are great for children who love sport and swimming!

Why choose night lenses?

Night Lenses offer the same visual correction as laser surgery, without any invasive procedure. And unlike surgery, any changes to your vision are reversible if overnight contact lens wear is ceased.

Not only do Night Lenses provide visual freedom but comfort as well. With no contact lenses during the day your eyes can breathe and create moisture naturally.

How night Lenses work

Being fitted with Night contact lenses is very similar to conventional lenses. Your optometrist uses a corneal topographer to take a scan of the eye, which is then used to design tailor-made contact lenses. Through a series of appointments, your optometrist will complete the fitting process and show you how to look after your lenses.

After the first night, your vision will already be partly corrected and over the next few days it will keep improving. In just one week your vision will be fully corrected and stable all day long. Once you are fitted with Night lenses, you will receive a replacement supply of lenses as advised by the optometrist either annually or 6 monthly.

Night lenses are available from our Gordon St, GlasgowMilngavie,  Fenwick Road,  and Lothian Road, Edinburgh.

Myopia Management

Myopia, or short sightedness, affects about 30% of the population. Due to genetics and lifestyle changes, more children are developing myopia. High levels of myopia can affect quality of life and ocular health. Changes to lifestyle including spending more time outdoors and limiting screen time can reduce the risk of myopia worsening. Specialist contact lenses and spectacles have been designed to slow the progression of the condition.

What is myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is an inability to see objects clearly in the distance Myopia currently affects 1 in 3 of the UK population. Over the last 50 years, the number of short-sighted children in the UK has doubled. By 2050 it is estimated that half the global population will be myopic.
The condition mostly occurs when the eyeball grows too long in length. This means light can no longer focus at the back of the eye, producing blurry images.
While myopia often runs in families, it is also influenced by environmental factors including prolonged time indoors and use of screens.
It can be progressive and those diagnosed at a young age are likely to become increasingly myopic as they grow older.

What can we do to manage myopia?

It is difficult to prevent myopia, but there are numerous ways we can slow the progression of it.
The length of the eye has a strong link to myopia. Black & Lizars have invested in advanced technology which allows us to accurately measure axial length (eyeball length) in order to detect, monitor and manage myopia progression. This technology will allow us to offer targeted treatment options based on a child’s individual needs.

Go outside

Research suggests that spending more time in natural outdoor conditions, whether sunny or overcast, reduces myopic change by acting to prevent elongation in the eye.
Spending at least 2 hours outdoors per day is recommended.

 Regular breaks from near work

Ensure that you take a break from near work at least every 30 minutes. When taking a break, it should be to focus into the distance rather than switching from one near task to another

 Increase working distance

Ensure that your near working distance is greater than 30cm where possible

 Treatment at Black & Lizars

Black & Lizars is ideally placed to help reduce the progression of myopia in children.
Whilst some optical companies are limited to 1 or 2 options for myopia management, we are delighted to have the equipment, specialist training and products to offer all three forms of myopia management vision correction on the market today. These treatments are proven to slow or in some cases halt the progression of myopia, meaning that your child is much less at risk of developing eye health complications related to myopia as their eyes grow.

Biometry

A biometer is advanced clinical equipment that can accurately measure the length of an eyeball (axial length)
A child with a longer than average axial length is at higher risk of developing myopia.
Our myopia management treatment options attempt to slow how quickly the eye lengthens to control myopia progression.
By undertaking biometry measurements at every appointment, we can determine the risk of progression and the effectiveness of myopia management treatment more accurately than ever before.

Which treatment option should I choose?

You should have a discussion with your optometrist about which of the following treatment options would suit your child, depending on their spectacle prescription, lifestyle or suitability for contact lenses.

 Night (Orthokeratology) contact lenses

Worn at night, these lenses are used to correct myopia so that patients no longer need to wear contact lenses or spectacles during the day.
They work by reshaping the front of the eye while sleeping.
When removed after waking, the eye temporarily retains the new shape, providing excellent vision all day. They also have the added benefit of slowing down myopic progression.

 Day (daily disposable) contact lenses

Highly effective and comfortable, these soft, daily disposable lenses have been found to reduce the progression of myopia.
They incorporate dual focus technology to control peripheral light rays going into the eye, preventing the eye from elongating further.
As there is no cleaning or storage required, they have a very low risk of infection.

Spectacle lenses

Worn like normal spectacles, these lenses incorporate revolutionary ‘defocus incorporated multiple segments’ or (D.I.M.S) technology to provide full vision correction in the central area and a peripheral treatment zone to simultaneously manage myopia progression.

Colorimetry

Overlay assessment and colorimetry clinics can provide solutions to aid in the management of visual stress. By using transparent coloured sheets or customised coloured lenses, symptoms of visual stress can be reduced to improve reading fluency.

This is a test that can deal with one of the symptoms of Dyslexia, but Dyslexia itself cannot be diagnosed from visual stress testing.

Overlay assessment and colorimetry clinics can provide solutions to aid in the management of visual stress. By using transparent coloured sheets or customised coloured lenses, symptoms of visual stress can be reduced to improve reading fluency.

Commonly visual stress can be associated with conditions such as dyslexia. However, it is not possible to diagnose dyslexia from visual stress testing.

Visual Stress describes visual discomfort some people can experience when reading.

Symptoms include:

·       Blurring of text

·       Letters appearing to move

·       Patterns appearing in text

·       Difficulty moving between lines of text

·       Eyestrain or headaches during or after reading

Visual stress occurs when nerve pathways connecting the eye and brain don’t work efficiently. For some people, certain colours help to reduce symptoms.

What is involved?

Full eye examination - including prescription check and ocular health assessment.

Overlay assessment – use of transparent coloured sheets to perform reading assessments to determine if reading fluency could be improved.

Colorimetry assessment – if coloured overlays are beneficial, customised coloured lenses can be made to further enhance benefits.

Cost:

Routine eye examinations in Scotland are covered by NHS.

Overlay assessment - £50

Colorimetry assessment - £60

Optomap Retinal Imaging

An Optomap scan is a comprehensive image which shows 5x more than a regular NHS digital image.  This machine produces a high-resolution image of the back of your eye in one single capture.  This aids in the detection of conditions such as retinal detachments, diabetes and floaters.  The Optomap technology was founded and developed in Scotland.

What is an Optomap?

An Optomap scan is the world's most leading, comprehensive and advanced scan of the back of your eye.  It provides us with the widest digital view of the retina in just one image.  A standard NHS photograph will show us only 15% of the retina at any one time, compared to over 80% with the Optomap.  This is over 5x more than a regular digital image.  The Optomap machine was founded and designed in Scotland by an engineer whose son lost his sight due to a retinal tear being detected too late.  This tear was not able to be detected then by the existing technology.

How does an Optomap work and is it safe?  The Optomap machine uses safe, low powered laser wavelengths and a curved mirror to simultaneously scan and provide a high resolution, detailed image of the back of your eye in one single capture.  It is completely painless, safe and only takes seconds to complete each scan.  No part of the machine comes in contact with the eye.  In over 40 million images which have been taken, there have been no side effects reported by Optos (the company who founded Optomap).

What does the Optomap scan show?  The different wavelengths of laser light allow us to examine different structures and detect abnormalities earlier. This can help diagnose ocular and systemic conditions such as diabetes, stroke, retinal tear/detachment, naevus (eye freckles), floaters and high blood pressure. We can also determine if changes are new or longstanding. Capturing scans on a regular basis, as advised by your optometrist, allows us to create a timeline of your eye health.

Who can have the scan?  This scan is available to and advised for all ages, including children.  Not only is it safe for children, but it is highly recommended. By capturing baseline data from as early an age as possible, it allows us to detect changes more easily in the future.  Early detection allows for early treatment and sight preservation.

Screenshot 2021-01-31 at 15.29.30.png

The cost of this scan is £30 and allows for unlimited Optomap scans performed within the same appointment.

Both the Optomap and OCT give you and your Optometrist maximum information regarding your eye health with minimal exposure time.  This is not only beneficial to you as a patient but is ideal and relevant in the current climate.

OCT: Optical Coherence Tomography

An OCT scan is an extremely detailed scan of the front or back surface of the eye and available for all ages, including children.  It produces a 2D or 3D image of various structures such as the macula, optic nerve and anterior chamber.  It can be used to detect conditions such as macular degeneration and nerve changes.

An OCT scan is an extremely detailed scan of the front or back surface of the eye.  It produces a 2D or 3D image of various structures such as the macula, optic nerve and anterior chamber.  It can be used to detect conditions such as macular degeneration and nerve changes (e.g., glaucoma).

What is an OCT and how does it work?

An OCT, or optical coherence tomography, is an extremely advanced and detailed scan of the front or back surface of the eye.  Similar to an ultrasound (which uses sound waves), an OCT uses light waves which are reflected from either the front or back surface of the eye. This in turn creates a highly detailed 2D or 3D image of various internal structures.

What does an OCT show?  The OCT machine not only photographs an area of the retina, but it also creates a cross-section of the structures and various layers which are not visible to the eye.  Unlike a photograph, which only shows superficial pathology, the OCT scan allows for early and easier detection of conditions such as macular degeneration or nerve changes found in glaucoma.  These images are digitally stored and can be viewed alongside each other in a timeline manner to detect even the most subtle changes.

How is the scan taken? Having an OCT scan is a quick and easy process.  Nothing comes into contact with the eye and it is completely pain-free. You will be asked to look at a target and the scan will be taken in seconds, much like taking a photograph.

Who can have the scan?  This scan is available to and advised for all ages, including children

The cost of this scan is £20 and allows for unlimited types of OCT scans performed within the same appointment.
