Maximising remaining vision
Many people suffer from low vision which cannot be corrected by conventional means. This may be due to age, disease, accident or birth defect. Because eye disease is more common in the elderly the number of people affected by low vision will continue to increase in proportion to the average age of our population.
Black & Lizars have developed a specialist low vision clinic in Albert Drive and Fenwick Road, Giffnock in Glasgow's south side. The clinic is devoted to all aspects of low vision including sight testing, assessment of visual capabilities and the prescription of relevant visual aids. The clinic uses a variety of visual aids from simple magnifiers to the latest sophisticated electronic aids from America and Holland. These can allow even those patients with severe visual loss due to conditions such as macular degeneration to regain some visual function. In many cases remarkable results are possible.

The NHS low vision services, whilst valuable, are unfortunately limited in the range of devices they may use, have long waiting lists and are located (for Glasgow) in Gartnavel Hospital which is geographically awkward for many people. It is not our intention to replace the NHS services where simple devices are given on free loan, but rather to offer patients the chance to try every possible aid. Standard aids / magnifiers are available from our clinic and NHS referral will be offered to all patients who might benefit from the free loan hospital service.
